English Curriculum

In English, students learn through speaking and listening, writing and representing, responding and composing, handwriting and digital technologies, reading and viewing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. They are encouraged to think imaginatively, creatively, critically and interpretively, express themselves and reflect on their own learning. They learn about the English language and literature through working with a wide range of spoken, visual, multimodal and digital texts. Students learn how language varies according to context and how to communicate to a range of audiences for different purposes. They learn to read for information and pleasure.   

At St Patrick's, we embrace contemporary views of literacy, we acknowledge that a literate person in contemporary society is multi-literate. These views of literacy acknowledge the importance of the acquisition of traditional print literacy skills and further recognise that in order to function effectively in society a person needs to develop skills, knowledge and understandings of other literacies such as digital, visual and spatial. 

AIMS

At St Patrick’s, English education seeks to assist and encourage students to:

• Understand and use language effectively, appreciate, reflect on and enjoy the English language and to make meaning in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive, critical and powerful
• Gain an understanding of the linguistic structures and features of standard Australian English and be able to apply these in Language, Literature and Literacy
• Gain knowledge of the ways in which language varies according to context, purpose and audience and apply this knowledge appropriately across all Key Learning Areas
• Listen to, view, read and create a wide range of literary and non-literary texts involving a variety of modes (spoken, written and multimodal) and digital media
• Gain an appreciation that our interpretation of texts may be influenced by cultural, social and personal differences.
